CHARACTER INFORMATION

Character Name: Lucas Devain

Age: Eons Old, appears around 30

World Information:

TLDR: Devain is the main antagonist of his setting. The main events are set on a massive planar form called Galn. Galn is also the name of one of two creator deities, whose corpse comprises the planar space. The two deities stole life from another burgeoning universe so they didn’t have to die creating their own; but this irritated that stolen life, which shattered the deities’ control and drove Galn to essentially embrace a bodily death to avoid being ripped apart on an essence level. The remaining deity, the Lightbringer was extremely put out by this and made a plane spanning city known as the Pale City, which imprisoned all of the offshoot varieties of life that had been made from the stolen life, and made a bunch of horned giant humanoids known as the children of light/the shepherds, to act as something between nobles and wardens, keeping the city in absolute order.

Once again, Life HATED that, and created seven children with aspects of itself, who by their combined powers managed to shatter the walls of the city, but were banished, and in one case, cursed for their actions. Eventually the one who got cursed came back and introduced death and fear to the deathless and fearless shepherds, who proceeded to flip out and die/hide about it. Lightbringer got scared again too since life was getting mad, and made a false sky to hide behind. End age one, begin age two.

Age two is basically an everything goes brawl between a bunch of factions, and life essentially uses this to drain a huge amount of the Lightbringer's power and hand it to the life offshoots. Unsurprisingly those offshoots mostly blow each other up, but that is fine because they basically just get recycled by life. Eventually they do so much terrible stuff that the non-godlike life offshoots use the power of life to depose and hang them. End age two, begin age three.

In age three people start to actually learn stuff about the universe and a lot of science and innovation happens before they discover the bones of the old hanged gods, and basically go “Hey we could make nukes with this”. They do that, it goes as expected. End age three, begin age four. This is when the main story takes place, and is basically a high fantasy magic place with a bunch of horrifying things hiding in the forgotten spaces. That’s the very short version. A longer version(Several pages long) is also available below if you are interested in more information.

That's Here!

Character Information:

TLDR: Lucas Devain is an offshoot of life, and one of the seven previously mentioned children, the Conduit of the concept of Unity. He was basically raised in a prison, and dealt with the problems that come with that, only having the other six children for real company sometimes when they could evade their wardens. Eventually, getting tired of this, they plotted to use their powers to free the people trapped in the city, which was everyone. This sort of worked, and the walls were brought down, but they all got captured and Lucas was cursed to be unable to directly cause disorder, and likewise, to never again meet his friends.

Understandably he was not thrilled with this and, after gaining an awareness of himself as a shard of unity/life he came back for revenge. Hidden by the same curse that had been placed on him, the Lightbringer couldn’t figure out what was happening when Lucas started causing uprisings in the remaining people of the city. The will of the people shaped reality and the shepherds were essentially all killed or went into deep hiding. The Lightbringer threw up its metaphorical hands and said “Ok that’s terrifying I’m gonna go” and made a false sky to hide behind.

Lucas went “No that’s stupid, get back here!” and started stealing little pieces of the Lightbringer to hand to people. That caused a huge number of problems but honestly Lucas wasn’t paying attention to that, and instead was just enjoying making the primordial that had imprisoned him and then ruined what life he was able to build suffer. Eventually the thrill kind of wore off, and Lucas realized that despite more or less winning vs. the Lightbringer, he actually wasn’t any closer to his new goal, which was to unite all the offshoots of life back into a single being, which would leave their terrible universe for a presumably better one where there were fewer awful creator deities hanging around. Unfortunately while he was getting comfortable and starting to settle in with the mortals around him, the curse reminded him that he wasn’t allowed to have nice things by killing everyone he had grown to love. Lucas decided that was enough of that and he had to get back to work.

Over the course of two additional ages, Lucas would go to thousands of years of college, and start like a million usurpation and conflict causing schemes respectively. He did the second thing to draw out the guardians protecting the still living essence of Galn, since it was binding unity/life to the plane.

That essentially worked for most of the process, but at the last hurdle, some people got wise, and locked him out of the giant soul bomb he was going to detonate to finish off the guardians. This made Lucas really sad, and he got depressed for a few thousand years while he had repeat showdowns with the survivors of the whole soul bomb incident.

Depression was replaced by anxiety when they just randomly stopped showing up, and he decided he had to figure out what was up with that, which he failed to do for a few hundred years until a version of them with no memory of him just sort of knocked on his door wanting a favor. Lucas had an internal face journey, and went “Yeah ok. But in return you’re going to be fate bound to do one thing for me ok?” and the survivors went “Yeah that sounds fair.” And Lucas went “I cannot believe that went that smoothly, what the hell?”

Lucas proceeded to lead the survivors to the site of the old soul bomb, and called in his favor to force them to give him access to it. It still took him a while to get past the other defenses but at this point, that really wasn’t something he was worried about. He blew up the soul bomb, finally winning, and getting to rejoin unity/life, via becoming a giant sky egg that would hatch into a singular avatar of unity, and peace out of the universe. Now in the campaign, that is something that the survivors are on track to circumvent via time travel, but for the purposes of this application, this is the moment Lucas has been ripped away from.

This is an extremely condensed version of events believe it or not, but a more full recounting can be found in a separate document.

Here Too!

Personality:

Lucas is, at his core a quiet but sociable man. His long life has taught him the value of silence and sociability alike, with much of his early life spent in quiet solitude. While he is happy to talk, and does so with great vigor when roused to, Lucas finds himself most comfortable when alone, surrounded by the vibrant quiet of nature, or the low susurrations of a nice teahouse. This is a bit ironic, as he is quite obsessed with the creation of unity and togetherness, albeit in a somewhat more literal form than most might assume. Lucas truly believes that people are the most important thing in existence. However, the caveat is that what exactly counts as a person to him is murky at best. Being obsessed with unity, Lucas sees all people as extensions of a single self, and as such, often looks at individuals as mere temporary vessels for that larger being. As a result, Lucas sees little value in the life of any individual, even himself, beyond what they contribute to the larger whole.

This tendency to take an abstract view of the world extends to other areas of his personality as well. A good example is his view of time. Having lived for so long, and in so many circumstances, Lucas has become desensitized to the scale of time and action. That he is victorious in one encounter, or defeated in another is almost incidental to him, as he feels that the larger conflict is the only thing that will have lasting consequences. Part of this is the sheer number of years that he has seen go by; but another is the degree to which he sees the world as fragile, and almost disposable. Having seen ages come and go, and repeatedly losing things important to him, Lucas has developed an almost nihilistic disregard for his own suffering, and, by extension, the suffering of others.

This does not however mean that he is cruel. Quite to the contrary, he is drawn to help those who he crosses paths with, and is happy to improve their well-being where he can. The happiness of one, after all, is the happiness of all; but that sentiment stops the moment a person becomes an obstacle to his plans. A life of uncertainty and conflict, on top of an enemy utterly devoid of mercy or compassion has created an intense rage towards things that knowingly impede what Lucas sees as the salvation of life itself. It is with a degree of reservation that Lucas will begin conflict where it does not serve a larger goal, but in the art of fostering grudges, Lucas is among the most proficient.

Despite this, Lucas doesn’t take himself especially seriously. While he knows that he has grand capabilities, he doesn’t feel that this makes him intrinsically better or more important than those around him. While his strict childhood under the tutelage of Ravicus instilled a rather verbose manner of speech in him, Lucas loathes pretention, pomp, and circumstance. From his perspective, these things are not merely obstacles to clarity, but a mimicry of the rote ritual that caged the people of his birthplace. He would much rather have a laugh at his own expense than demand any particular title or honor. To him, to speak clearly and kindly to those around you is the most basic of expectations. Those who refuse, he tends to take issue with.

All of this culminates in a man or extremes. While he is not malicious in a classical sense, Lucas sees little middle ground between ‘friend’ and obstacle to be removed’. He is capable of quick and decisive judgement, but by the same token, is prone to snap decisions and assumptions. He is kind, but not nice, and despite his cordial tone, he has carried out vengeances thousands of years after the reason for them.

To cast forward a bit, Lucas Devain, denied a purpose, is going to be an interesting place for him. As much as he is inextricably tied to his obsession, what will he do when there is no great self to unite into? What should he do now that he has, in effect, won, yet somehow remained excluded from the reward. His volatility and complex view of time may lead him to inspiration, but just as easily despair. In a place of monsters, what is a hidden monster to do with himself?

5-10 Key Character Traits:
Polite, Vengeful, Obsessive, Decisive, Kind, Ruthless, Volatile

Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, EITHER, or opt for 100% RANDOMIZATION?
I am open to either, as both could be very interesting to play out.

Opt-Outs:
I would prefer not to be a Minotaur or a Vampire simply because I find them less interesting to play, but I have no additional preferences.

Roleplay Sample:

Lucas smiled at the comment, and then stifled the urge to sigh. Where in all the uncountable damned realms had he ended up? And how; how he had ended up here was also important. Questions for another time, he decided. For now, public relations and an escape from the unpleasantly cramped closet.

"Angela, lovely name, and a joy to make your acquaintance, despite the circumstances." He said, peering out through the door before taking the first step out into...

Oh, all the gods be damned he was in the emporium. Stuffing down the urge to curse loudly, he gave the place a second look. It was expansive and loud, but seemed to lack the telltale insanely high ceilings. No, no thankfully not the emporium, but somewhere with an eerily similar sense of aesthetics.

"Well." He said "I have never been here in my life. Wonderful." A strange rumbling noise caused Lucas to look about questioningly, before he realized that the sound had come from his stomach. Now THAT was a blast from the past. "Ah." He said, slightly embarrassed. "Seems food may be in order. Though we may have to deal with the- hm, golems, I suppose?" He continued with a shrug.

"Don't suppose you have any idea what those are about Angela?" He asked, waving vaguely at the passing automatons. "Because I am extremely out of my realm of expertise here."

Abilities

⯌ Fate Manipulation Lucas possesses the ability to take the fate and significance of others and change or replace it onto targets of his choosing. While potent, this ability is tied primarily to his contact with Unity.

⯌ Immutable Being While it provides him no real other benefits, Lucas cannot truly die, instead being reformed and returned to life.

⯌ Collective Will When leading a group of people he gains the ability to shift reality proportionally to the size and willpower of the collective around him.
Out-of-Character

⯌ Backtag Sure go for it!

⯌ Fourthwall Sure, though I'm curious how it would come about.

⯌ Off-Limits Nothing in particular.

⯌ Other N/A
In-Character

⯌ Pysical Contact Lucas is comfortable with physical contact, though he tends to abstain from initiating it.

⯌ Mental Contact While he is acutely aware of other people looking into his mind, he does not take any particular steps to stop it. The things he wants hidden are hidden deep.

⯌ Flirt Lucas will happily flirt when engaged, though he keeps a layer of distance most of the time.

⯌ Fight Devain expects to be attacked at all times. This does not mean he is good at predicting the specifics, or that he even particularly enjoys winning when it happens, but hes had to fight so many things by this point that he probably won't even be surprised when you sucker punch him.

⯌ Injury Lucas is extremely hard to put down, and can take a lot of punishment and come back strong. Short of killing him, go for it. For death and such, just shoot me a message and we'll discuss it.

⯌ Death Basically as above. Lucas tends to bounce back from death fairly quickly regardless, but ultimately ill go with whatever makes sense.
